Pearls of Wisdom
Michelle L Malulani Ake, 54
What are your thoughts on aging?
At 54, I can say that aging has given me freedom, confidence, and clarity. I know who I am, I know what matters, and I live with gratitude. It’s not about getting older, it’s about getting better.
What wonderful things can younger women look forward to at your age? Younger women and girls, might think that it's scary getting older. Let's inspire them!
Younger women sometimes fear getting older, but here’s the truth: there’s so much to look forward to. At this age, you gain confidence in who you are, freedom from comparison, and joy in the simple things. You learn that resilience makes you strong, wisdom makes you steady, and gratitude makes life sweeter. It’s not scary —it’s empowering.
Share tips on how you celebrate yourself, what you do for fun, and self care.
I celebrate myself through travel. It allows me to step away from work and routine, calm my spirit, open my mind, and see life from a new perspective. Each trip recharges me and helps me return ready to take on the world. I also make it a point to try something new every time, whether it’s exploring local food, learning a cultural tradition, or simply being fully present in a new place. Travel Tip: VIATOR allows me to select the most unique adventures in almost every country.
Share one experience/story. We all have life struggles. But the big share is how did you over come and lift yourself up? Advice to other women to empower them.
One of my many hard struggles was as a young adult. I lived on my own at 18, worked multiple part-time jobs, and still had early classes. I didn’t have much, no reliable car, just a moped, and I paid for college on my own. But I pushed through, found time to finish my courses, and eventually pursued a second degree, a Master’s in Education. My advice to young women: your beginnings don’t limit you. Discipline, persistence, and belief in yourself will carry you further than you can imagine. What feels like a struggle now is actually building the strength that will one day empower you.
What would you tell your 14-year-old self?
You are stronger than you think, don’t be afraid to dream big, and trust that every struggle is shaping you into the woman you’re meant to be. Keep going, your future is brighter than you can imagine.
What is your definition of success?
My definition of success isn’t just about achievements, it’s about balance. It means living with purpose, staying healthy, and having the freedom to enjoy family, close friends, and the simple joys of life. Success is when I can look around and see that my relationships and my passions are making a positive impact. True success is building something meaningful while still having the time and energy to celebrate life with the people I love.
